When Your Animal is Sick and you can’t hear

My teagle beagle Sarah, is basically an old dog with still a lot of moxy and a bit of cranky thrown in. We had a cold spell and being blind, she also had a few blind mishaps falling off things. Her back seemed clearly out of whack and she’s still trying to right herself after having a repeat bout with Vesticular Disease (old dog inner ear thing). Anyway, she was very restless and hurting. I checked in with my Guides, and I kept hearing it was minor and she’d be fine, that she just had some old dog chronic stuff like arthritis, etc. Not trusting my guidance and still in fear, I took her to the vet who didn’t really hear me and scared the *%$#@ out of me. (This seems to be a recurring theme with vets and me. Perhaps so I can teach this lesson.)

Anyway, today after a few nights of big time drugs for her, (would be nice if I shared them), I have learned several things that may help you with your own animal communication when your animal is sick.

  1. Don’t try to talk to your animal when you are freaked out. My freaking out actually freaked out Sarah more. Then we were both two big emotional wrecks. This doesn’t mean “should” yourself by saying you should be calm as can be for the sake of your animal. Please! Repression doesn’t work! We don’t need to recreate our childhoods for the sake of our animals. Just know you will have a hard time hearing at that time. Do what you need to do in an emergency, but wait until you are calm to check in with animal communication. Maybe even take a break and walk into the other room to not upset each other.
  2. Don’t talk to a vet who doesn’t know crap about animal communication, or is too burn-out to even see your dog as an individual. This is counter-productive. (I am sorry to say there are many who fall into this category.)
  3. Find a new vet if she jumps way ahead in the future and talks about if the illness progresses and your options to end life, or if she quickly tries to sell the current new dog food fad. Seriously, this happened.
  4. Explore all your natural options like flower essences, homeopathy, herbs, hands-on work. Some vets are limited in their knowledge. There are many ways to heal.
  5. Trust, trust, your intuition. You know your animal best and when you are more calm and centered you will hear and know what is happening and can then receive incredible insights. You will know what is best to do for her.
  6. Be wary of strong drugs on a sensitive dog. Poor Sarah has been acting like she is hopped up on Speed when I gave her the steroids prescribed. One drug does not fit all.
  7. Educate yourself and don’t fall into fear. Not every illness is the same. Not every cause of each illness is the same either. Many times we fall into fear, like I did, because illnesses of animals we have loved and lost come back to haunt us. That’s when logical mind needs to come in and acknowledge there are still some losses that need to be grieved and healed, and to remind yourself you are only human. You won’t always do the perfect right thing. You make mistakes. It happens. But you are doing your best for your loved one.
  8. When talking to your animal, remember that she may not know what is happening with her body, but she can communicate clues of what she feels.
  9. Always carry a bottle of Rescue Remedy for your animal and yourself in times of fear or illness crisis.
  10. Don’t be afraid to get a second opinion, like from another animal communicator. I often do this if I am too upset or scared to hear and trust what I get and I’ve been doing this work for eleven years. My intuitive best buds have been invaluable support for this kind of advice.

Remember, stay calm, get educated, and then check in.

Anniversaries

What most people don’t realize is that after major loss, when you think most of it is over and done, the anniversary dates will rehash it all over again. Sometimes it will sneak up on you.

Every year I have a very hard time in early May. Even though my Mother has since been gone for fifteen years, and even though she has made frequent astral visits, I still feel grief overcome me like a wave around the 5th and 6th of the month from not having a Mom HERE.

I have a trauma anniversary date coming up when my life exploded. These kinds of anniversaries bring up all kinds of nonsense to clear out, and frequent, “Oh, man, I thought I dealt with that.”

If you have lost a loved one, whether a human or furry one, the anniversary date will bring up that loss even if you are too busy that day to notice. Is there something unfinished besides the usual grief? Is there still work to do?

In my own life, I am finding, that I needed new resources–the support I didn’t have when I was going through everything (this excludes my dear, wonderful friends who were amazing).  I didn’t know there were actual groups and support people who had dealt with parenting highly-destructive and cruel RAD kids. There was after-support? Validation of what I had lived through might help clean up the leftover grief.

Maybe you went through a long illness with your animal and have that leftover grief.  Had to take care of an aging parent? Lost a home through foreclosure? Is there a group of folks that have gone through the same thing that you can talk with? Only someone who had lived through it could really truly understand what you went through. You need a witness.

I am amazed when I look around at the friends and family around me at what life has thrown at everyone. It’s been very hard time for all. But maybe we are all healing major, major stuff, and this is the one way to do it. I have no idea why we all agreed to contract to do this. I still think we were all high and loopy in heaven before we came in!

And remember support is just that. It supports you and helps you stand. Any support that causes you to feel worse or be thrown backwards, is not true support.

Controlled Empathy and tv

I’m down with a nasty bug so I have lots of time to reflect, which isn’t always a good thing. Sometimes when I am in a bad state I tend to grab for what isn’t good for me, like junk food or bad movies.

Long ago, when my family was in one piece, we’d watch the show Angel together. Not so much feeling nostalgic last night, but without my Netflix selection, I grabbed for the dvd’s I had.

I was surprised by my first thought. How the hell did I watch this show? Hell, being the accurate word. There was enormous amount of violence, darkness, weird stuff. All of which I am sure is good television watching, but I felt it.  I mean, really felt it. My sensitivity has so increased, or maybe I was so numb in my life to the negative at the time that this was nothing. After one episode I felt intense fear in life where there should be none. As an empath, I was negatively influenced.

On hindsight, I think I grabbed for that show to purge some of that fear and leftover bad stuff, and that is a way to use a more controlled and thought-out empathy. The whole episode was about things you trusted looking one way but were completely different inside. (Cordy was the evil Master but no one knew, and Angel was the evil Angeles).  Later that night I did have one “hell” of a nightmare that cleared all that out.

It’s having that awareness–how is the show you are watching affecting your sensitivity? When you are attracted to a show what are you purging, dealing with, that needs to come out? The key is what are you resonating with or turned off by? What really hits you?

I think today I will reach out to my feel-good Racing Stripes movie or The Rookie to counteract last night’s purge, and I will be much more aware of what I am drawn to in my selections. There’s guidance there.

A little aside to this post: turns out the dream I had after watching the show was a premonition of information. It was a warning about disturbing news  I received the next day.

Today’s tip and tool is Taking care of your body

With sensitive abilities usually comes sensitive bodies. What this means is, we are over-sensitive to the environment, which most others–who are turned off–naturally block out. Be extra gentle and loving with yourself. If it is an extra hot day, avoid going out the middle of the afternoon. If it’s a sunny day, wear lots of sun screen. It’s not over-babying, it’s nurturing. See self care in a whole new way–a better way to take care of you, because you are worth it.

Mental Illness vs. psychic ability

Do you know the difference?

I felt this piece of info was important to share when it comes to psychic ability.

After parenting an adopted child for five years who had tons of both, I slowly learned what was the difference, and that mental illness did not look how I thought it would. I always thought illness would be very obvious–a bit like what we see on television–the bag lady or the man in the white strait jacket. What we thought was charming quirkiness in “Jennifer” early on, was clear-cut signs of mental illness that everyone poo-poo’ed away (many for their own agendas). Once adolescence kicked in, we had full-blown “lots of things”. And honey, that was not ADHD.

There is hearing voices of Guides/Angels or spirits in the room, and then there is hearing voices of your other personalities, split off parts, or out-and-out schizophrenia. A good indicator these are not Guides? The voices aren’t helpful. These voices may even try to get a rise out of you to get you upset (this could even be earthbound spirits. They like to do that).  Guides/Angels are always loving and when you hear their guidance you feel a sense of rightness and an inner knowing. They are much like a good psychic reading. You don’t have a reading and hear “you are going to die!”  The psychic will tell you that you need to be more careful when you drive. Guides/Angels will never say nasty things about other people or tell you to hurt them in any way. Their drive is to help you have understanding and compassion for others. (The exception is a departed relative visiting who might give advice. Usually, you can identify the voice and how they always acted when they were alive.)

“Jennifer” would talk to voices in her room often and claim they were Guides, but I saw and felt nothing, except, I would have the beginning of a migraine when I entered. (Keep in mind though, earthbounds are attracted to high energy emotional states. I think she did have a few entities attached on top of everything else. Henceforth, my headaches).

Folks with personality disorders are really hard to peg as mentally ill. That’s the tough part. Borderlines (called RAD when they are young) will take your life onto a rollercoaster with one moment idolizing you when you do what they want, and the next despising you for not complying. They are also masters of triangulation pitting one person against another just for the drama of it, because chaos feels safe. On the surface, they are as charming as can be, and always who they think you want them to be. But without treatment or help, their lives are a continuous, bad amusement park ride and you don’t need to join them, or risk developing your own mental illnesses.

When I first came to the Sedona area, one of the first things I did was readings at a healing fair. My first customer was a schizophrenic who wanted to know about the implants attached to his head controlled by the government. I did give him the benefit of the doubt after watching years of X-files, but his wife later confirmed he had mental illness. There was also a girl who claimed she was a reincarnated Jesus (lots of those). What scares me is many folks like this need medication or psychological help and not a psychic reading. Sedona is notorious for attracting all kinds of people who want healing. I got an instant education what to look out for.

If you do hear voices that are not helpful, find your moods seriously erratic, go get some help.* Get educated. Our bodies and minds are so complicated. Sometimes it’s just a hormone imbalance! We all have the ability to go a little off kilter in the most stressful times. (I’ve got a bit of OCD inherited from my grandmother. Thanks Nanny!)

And if you have more of a psychic intruder bothering you? Being a sensitive/psychic you could open some doors you don’t need to open to outside unhelpful energies attracted to your bright light. Learn clearing exercises and find someone who specializes in escorting them out.  I always call in Archangel Michael for the small jobs.

*Thanks to Anna who commented so I can clarify. Hearing negative voices telling you to hurt people or yourself  (not a good thing), WITH other signs, such as, very disordered, illogical  or paranoid thinking, delusions, dissociation, cutting, emotional instability, etc. can definitely be a sign of mental illness. Many of us who are mediums, can pick up entities that are negative and can affect us. See earthbound spirits above.

Tool when you feel ungrounded

In this crazy world today with the crazy energies and so much change, it is easy to feel very ungrounded. We may reach for equally crazy things to correct the balance or to feel more stable, such as overeating, or over-shopping, or even codependent behavior (us healer/empath types love to grab for this).  It’s as if we are thrashing about in the sea around us with no life preserver, so we are trying to find one.

Today’s guidance is to create ANCHORS.

What helps you feel more grounded?

Here’s some ideas:

  1. Create structure. As a capricorn, my natural gift is to build and create structure. Structure can be as simple as having a routine you do every day, such as waking up in the morning having coffee and sitting in your yard. Or, having a writing schedule. Or, riding a bike every day after dinner. My favorite has been my evening routine with my dogs sitting in my reading room and watching Project Runway.
  2. Friends. An anchor can be a friend you regularly check in with. The more the better. They are probably feeling as ungrounded as you are nowadays, so you may be an anchor for them.
  3. Check in with yourself. I suppose this is the same as centering, but I think anything that allows you to check back in with what you want, feel and need, is good. I journal. As an empath, it is too easy for me to carry others’ stuff and by the end of the day, I have no idea what I want! Visual journaling has been highly helpful to me also and even just making lists of what you want to do or would like to do.
  4. And finally, pets. Go play with your animals! Animals take you into the present moment and help you get grounded. They are also easily counted on and constants in our lives among lots of change.
