Review of Afterlives of the Rich and Famous

It’s Thursday, that means, Review! Today I review:

Afterlives of the Rich and Famous by Sylvia Browne

I have a hidden passion, or maybe just guilty pleasure of reading tabloids like People magazine and Entertainment Weekly. I love to see what the celebs are up to, and especially like to see their humanity and how they are very much like the rest of us with problems, spiritual lessons and all. Therefore, I jumped at the chance to review Sylvia Browne’s new book, which has great bios on stars who have recently crossed over to the Other Side, including one of my personal favorites, Brittany Murphy. How are they doing now? Have they found happiness or healing on the Other Side? What did they learn while they were here? That’s the premise of her new book.

I enjoyed the intro which includes a breakdown of what makes up the world of the Other Side and what steps we go through when we return, as I love all info about the afterlife.  As with many of Sylvia’s books, I did differ with some details or facts she presents including her definition of “soulmates,” that we have only one Guide and I’ve experienced several, and a few other facts.  That can be explained as our paths and psychic experiences are as individual as our thumbprints and therefore, our perceptions or knowings are different. Even those who have had near-death experiences described their time in heaven differently.

I read with interest the bios of each hand-picked celebrity whose tales of life and then demise were told. I was like the kid in the candy store indulging on a giant lollipop taking in facts I had read before, and some I didn’t know.

Sylvia was taught that we all have life themes that we came in to explore. I had a hard time choosing which one resonated with me, my mind jumping around from “psychic” to “caretaker,” “rescuer,” and then “artistic pursuits,” and wondered why there wasn’t one marked “teacher” as I know is one of my missions. So far, my life hasn’t easily fallen neatly into any specific boxes, and I don’t think there is a simple formula that we all follow. It seems I had several themes and “to do’s” on my list to learn this time around, but it was fun to read about each celebrity’s themes chosen for them.

I haven’t always been a fan of Sylvia’s hard-ass style on delivering messages and have been upfront with that opinion. I did enjoy her book on dreams and recommend it as a resource in my Talking to Angels, Guides and Dead People class. I enjoyed the down-to-earth style of the writing this time around, but I did have a hard time with a large portion of this book.

As a teacher, I push that everyone can communicate with their Guides and doesn’t need a middleman. Mediums, like myself, simply can assist or get things rolling. From direct experience talking to or feeling your Guides, consciously recognizing their guidance, you become a believer. You feel that truth of what they say because you develop a trust and see their messages validated in your life. The messages of how the celebrities are doing on the Other Side are transcripted from information channeled from Francine, Sylvia’s longstanding Guide. Francine’s summaries on each celebrity can’t be backed by any kind of validation, which made it hard for my logical mind to embrace.  I don’t know Francine. I haven’t worked with this Guide directly for years like Sylvia has. I am sure she is highly trustworthy, but my mind still couldn’t grasp it. I’m not on the Other Side to concur the details she gives. To my mind, the recaps of where they are now could have been wish-for fantasies or made-up stories that we would want to hear. I would have embraced it more if, perhaps,  Sylvia retold mediumship readings she did with the relatives of the celebrities. Then there would be a logical psychic connection between relative and the crossed-over, and instant validation of the information or facts coming through from the left-behind brother or spouse. Instead, it felt like the heresay in People magazine, “So and so saw our celebrity having lunch with big time movie star and is rumored to have said…” I just couldn’t make that blind leap.

It was fun to read as a guilty pleasure, and if I simply saw the book as another tabloid report, took in the details about the afterlife that I enjoy, then it was an entertaining read.

Thanks to Trish for giving me the opportunity to review this book for Ronni’s Psychic Room.

I’m so excited…

It’s too cold! Today has been a great day to snuggle up to my girls, make some warm foods, and read and learn. It’s the perfect time of year for that. And coincidently, (great segue in, don’t you think?) the e-book I’ve spent over a year compiling, living and writing, will be ready tomorrow and I can’t contain my excitement. I love how our tough experiences in the end can benefit others if we share what we have learned.

Help! I’m Sensitive! 50 Tools to help you thrive and survive is located in the bookstore here at this site. Official announcements for the book come out tomorrow, but I couldn’t contain myself.

I’ve learned valuable techniques to help with my sensitivity including techniques like Mouse Theory and Psychic Vampires, filling in holes, turtle shell, changing aura pictures, dealing with other people throwing their fears at you, taking care of the number one need for empaths, why panic attacks can happen in malls, and much more. I’ve included my favorite entries here from my blog and included a great deal of tools from my arsenal given to me by my helpful team of Guides in the past year.

You can order the book now here today and start empowering yourself right away and have warm reading material for those cold nights.

Is there a Satan?

I’ve been watching a fun tv series called Reaper. The premise of the show is a young man’s parents sell his soul to the devil. On his 21st birthday the devil shows up with an assignment: his new job is to retrieve bad souls on earth and send them back to hell.

It’s been a cleverly written show with some witty moments, and the theme of good vs. evil covers every episode. The message? In every moment we can decide if we go the higher or the lower road.

I didn’t realize that watching that show would be a percursor to something in my own life. Lately I’m seriously questioning what happens when the Bad is allowed to get away with it and still go on to hurt other people? Where’s God in that situation? Is there a Devil or a Satan as my estranged father-in-law believes? Or is there just sick and unhealthy people who don’t know any better? They are just so disconnected from the light.

My friend Caroline believes that today the good are growing lighter/stronger, and the bad are growing darker and darker. The two sides of the coin need to be there for balance.

Is that why the bad is allowed to continue to be so destructive?  Or does it karmically even out in the end like the other movie I watched, The Lovely Bones? What do you believe?

Sensitive tip and tool Wednesday

My new feature is offering a psychic tip every Wednesday to help fellow sensitives navigate today’s crazy energies.

Today’s tip and tool is Taking care of your body

With sensitive abilities usually comes sensitive bodies. What this means is, we are over-sensitive to the environment, which most others–who are turned off–naturally block out. Be extra gentle and loving with yourself. If it is an extra hot day, avoid going out the middle of the afternoon. If it’s a sunny day, wear lots of sun screen. It’s not over-babying, it’s nurturing. See self care in a whole new way–a better way to take care of you, because you are worth it.

For a reading or private lesson, go to my Readings page here. Care of the Sensitive online class starts the end of August. Sign up here. And look for my new ebook, Help! I’m Sensitive. Details coming.

What is a psychic empath?

What exactly is a psychic empath? You know you are a psychic empath if:

  • You walk into a room and you can feel if the air is heavy or light, if there was an argument in the room, or if someone is sad. Sometimes, it can be overwhelming.
  • You walk down the mall and you feel unbalanced or unsteady from the barrage of others’ feelings and emotions. (I used to call this my Walmart headache because I felt it every time I went there to shop).
  • You know your dog or cat is feeling stressed or sad because you can feel it. Sometimes, you confuse the feeling as your own. You may even feel other people’s ailments.
  • You may have a sensitive stomach, or have reactive skin to your environment.
  • Too much activity in your environment=crazy feelings inside you, nervousness, frustration, and major ADD.
  • You can merge with a person, plant or animal, and see from its perspective.
  • You tell yourself or someone has told you, you are too sensitive and need to “toughen up.”

Bottom line definition: psychic empaths experience the world from what they feel. And what they feel includes an enormous psychic information ready to be tapped into. We see below the layers.

Mental Illness vs. psychic ability

Do you know the difference?

I felt this piece of info was important to share when it comes to psychic ability.

After parenting an adopted child for five years who had tons of both, I slowly learned what was the difference, and that mental illness did not look how I thought it would. I always thought illness would be very obvious–a bit like what we see on television–the bag lady or the man in the white strait jacket. What we thought was charming quirkiness in “Jennifer” early on, was clear-cut signs of mental illness that everyone poo-poo’ed away (many for their own agendas). Once adolescence kicked in, we had full-blown “lots of things”. And honey, that was not ADHD.

There is hearing voices of Guides/Angels or spirits in the room, and then there is hearing voices of your other personalities, split off parts, or out-and-out schizophrenia. A good indicator these are not Guides? The voices aren’t helpful. These voices may even try to get a rise out of you to get you upset (this could even be earthbound spirits. They like to do that).  Guides/Angels are always loving and when you hear their guidance you feel a sense of rightness and an inner knowing. They are much like a good psychic reading. You don’t have a reading and hear “you are going to die!”  The psychic will tell you that you need to be more careful when you drive. Guides/Angels will never say nasty things about other people or tell you to hurt them in any way. Their drive is to help you have understanding and compassion for others. (The exception is a departed relative visiting who might give advice. Usually, you can identify the voice and how they always acted when they were alive.)

“Jennifer” would talk to voices in her room often and claim they were Guides, but I saw and felt nothing, except, I would have the beginning of a migraine when I entered. (Keep in mind though, earthbounds are attracted to high energy emotional states. I think she did have a few entities attached on top of everything else. Henceforth, my headaches).

Folks with personality disorders are really hard to peg as mentally ill. That’s the tough part. Borderlines (called RAD when they are young) will take your life onto a rollercoaster with one moment idolizing you when you do what they want, and the next despising you for not complying. They are also masters of triangulation pitting one person against another just for the drama of it, because chaos feels safe. On the surface, they are as charming as can be, and always who they think you want them to be. But without treatment or help, their lives are a continuous, bad amusement park ride and you don’t need to join them, or risk developing your own mental illnesses.

When I first came to the Sedona area, one of the first things I did was readings at a healing fair. My first customer was a schizophrenic who wanted to know about the implants attached to his head controlled by the government. I did give him the benefit of the doubt after watching years of X-files, but his wife later confirmed he had mental illness. There was also a girl who claimed she was a reincarnated Jesus (lots of those). What scares me is many folks like this need medication or psychological help and not a psychic reading. Sedona is notorious for attracting all kinds of people who want healing. I got an instant education what to look out for.

If you do hear voices that are not helpful, find your moods seriously erratic, go get some help.* Get educated. Our bodies and minds are so complicated. Sometimes it’s just a hormone imbalance! We all have the ability to go a little off kilter in the most stressful times. (I’ve got a bit of OCD inherited from my grandmother. Thanks Nanny!)

And if you have more of a psychic intruder bothering you? Being a sensitive/psychic you could open some doors you don’t need to open to outside unhelpful energies attracted to your bright light. Learn clearing exercises and find someone who specializes in escorting them out.  I always call in Archangel Michael for the small jobs.

*Thanks to Anna who commented so I can clarify. Hearing negative voices telling you to hurt people or yourself  (not a good thing), WITH other signs, such as, very disordered, illogical  or paranoid thinking, delusions, dissociation, cutting, emotional instability, etc. can definitely be a sign of mental illness. Many of us who are mediums, can pick up entities that are negative and can affect us. See earthbound spirits above.

Tool when you feel ungrounded

In this crazy world today with the crazy energies and so much change, it is easy to feel very ungrounded. We may reach for equally crazy things to correct the balance or to feel more stable, such as overeating, or over-shopping, or even codependent behavior (us healer/empath types love to grab for this).  It’s as if we are thrashing about in the sea around us with no life preserver, so we are trying to find one.

Today’s guidance is to create ANCHORS.

What helps you feel more grounded?

Here’s some ideas:

  1. Create structure. As a capricorn, my natural gift is to build and create structure. Structure can be as simple as having a routine you do every day, such as waking up in the morning having coffee and sitting in your yard. Or, having a writing schedule. Or, riding a bike every day after dinner. My favorite has been my evening routine with my dogs sitting in my reading room and watching Project Runway.
  2. Friends. An anchor can be a friend you regularly check in with. The more the better. They are probably feeling as ungrounded as you are nowadays, so you may be an anchor for them.
  3. Check in with yourself. I suppose this is the same as centering, but I think anything that allows you to check back in with what you want, feel and need, is good. I journal. As an empath, it is too easy for me to carry others’ stuff and by the end of the day, I have no idea what I want! Visual journaling has been highly helpful to me also and even just making lists of what you want to do or would like to do.
  4. And finally, pets. Go play with your animals! Animals take you into the present moment and help you get grounded. They are also easily counted on and constants in our lives among lots of change.
