If You Don’t Like My Dog, I Probably Won’t Like You

My Dog Theory

After several experiences, I now use this model as a frame of reference, and call this my DOG THEORY.

Weeks back, when the landlords had a painter come to take care of the outside of the house, I had an immediate dislike of the man. I don’t usually have this happen, and I don’t usually make quick judgements of people, so I dismissed the feeling.  When Emma Lou ran out to say hello, he was very curt with her, which I thought was odd. She is after all, really cute. Once painting began, he told me to block off the pet door because he needed to paint the deck. He said, “SHE likes to come and poop on the deck.” Not calling her by name, but SHE. At this point, I really didn’t like him. Turns out that empathic hit was accurate how he treated my time, space, and belongings, when he rushed through the job, lost one of my keys, and threw my stuff into the middle of the yard.

I had a new friend at church awhile back, who came to visit at the house. He was nice to the girls but saw them as “dogs”, if you know what I mean, talking of pack animal mentalities and hierarchies. When I explained I couldn’t stay out late at night because I needed to take care of the girls, he ignored that need and told me they’d be just fine, and for me to come out and have fun. He later showed himself as someone who cared very little about what I needed.

And finally, I recently had my propane converted to gas, thanks to my great landlords. The process will save me a ton of money on bills. The oven was converted and apparently, there was some kind of problem with the appliance. While baking, the whole house smelled like gas! I called the gas company who sent over the crankiest man I’ve ever met. He came into the house and as Emma jumped up to say hello he screamed at her, “Stay down!” He wasn’t even nice about it. He explained poorly to me what the problem was with the stove, and when I didn’t understand, he snapped at me!  Not once, but twice. How he treated Emma was a clear indication, again, how he’d treat me.

So there really is something behind my dog theory.  I wish I could take Emma Lou with me everywhere to be able to weed out potential friends and colleagues. For now, I will trust that gut feeling (empathic hit) I first get when I meet people, and not dismiss it.

  1. I so agree, and it can be so subtle too. My recent ex adores dogs, in fact he seemed a hero initially because he broke the window of someone’s car, when a dog was inside dying in the heat. But he never ‘got’ Doggie. He’d talk as if he was Doggie, impersonating her, but in a voice that I knew was not her. Sarcastic and dismissive of him. Perhaps his own insecurities. We split in February, and he has since abandoned two dogs we once shared.

  2. Hi,
Gut is Gut and It is our Animal ( Dog and Animal have a lot to teach us about ourselves ) part to say us something about people and events, good and bad ( sigh! ).
Our rational part say no no no…. Gut is so less rational…..It is so Animal an less human………Mistake!
In the past I didn’t believe my Gut, although told me…… Be careful!!!!!! Mistake, now I don’t mind about what people ( also loved ones ) could think how odd could be my behavior, I believe my gut, little bit over my navel, and doing this, not only safeguard myself and my life, also I conquered reliance to myself. Believe…….Trust Your Gut and Animals.
It works also about sites, email and remotely…. : ))))))))))
Could be a new topic for your Courses ????? ; )))))))))

  3. You can always tell a lot from people by the way they treat animals. My neighbor is very scared of dogs and when I walk with my dog by her house, she always has the greatest respect for her, even if she won’t approach her. If the kids are playing outside, she will tell them to watch out and not to throw anything that could hurt or scare the dog. She is a sensitive by the way.

I once had a person at my house making an estimate for my roof, when he got inside my backyard, Mia (my dog) barked at him, she’s a guard dog. He made a threatening remark at her. It turned out that this guy was lying to me. No wonder why Mia barked at him.

It turns out that every time I meet someone who does not like animals, there is something I do not like about them.

And I feel the same way, you don’t like my dog I don’t like you. I’m happy there are other people who thinks like me on this planet.

      1. Well, she told me that she is scared of dogs because her mother was scared. She loves them anyway. She is a sensitive and also a medium, maybe that is why she can see that they are creatures from heaven.

  4. I absolutely agree! I have always been able to judge character better through my dogs than myself. And my animal buddies have usually been right on the head!

  5. Ronni,
I totally get this, I have found that Tigger is an excellent barometer of people. For example when certain family members (who are totally toxic) come over he will instantly start hissing and growling and his tail just puffs up. As soon as they leave he is fine. Or a couple weeks ago I had a pest control dude over and as soon as he came in the house Tigger started growling. He told me I needed all this stuff and that there were all these various things in the house. Turned he was totally just trying to sell me a big contract and none of it was true. Tigger knew.

    1. That’s totally wild. I mean, he is so obvious about it and knows right away. You can miss hissing and growling. Wouldn’t it be really cool if people could do that when we didn’t like someone and they were toxic? Just hiss and growl? 🙂 I wish we could.
